West Brom have nothing to lose as Joe Gelhardt transfer lined up in January

Don Goodman has claimed that a January move for Joe Gelhardt would make “logical sense” for West Brom, who have suffered from a lack of creativity.

The Baggies are unbeaten in their last 10 fixtures albeit having drawn in nine of them and a lack of creativity in the final third has been their main downfall.

Josh Maja has been on fire since the start of the campaign but has been their only real source of goals

Leeds United attacker Gelhardt had been linked with a loan switch to the Hawthorns (Yorkshire Evening Post) and Goodman, speaking to West Brom News, thinks he could emulate Maja by giving his career a boost with a switch to The Hawthorns.

He said: “I would say there’s nothing to lose by going down that route, really. Very different type to Maja. Very easy to see them playing in the team together, rather than it being one or the other.

“He’s another one. He’s a little bit like Maja in that he wants to kickstart his career again because it hasn’t really worked out for him at Leeds United. I know he had a little loan spell at Sunderland and there were glimpses of what he was capable of. But he’s another player that just needs to sort of reset and go again, really.

“So for him to leave Leeds and be allowed to go to West Brom on loan, I think would be a win-win all around, if I’m honest with you. So yeah, it would make logical sense.”

West Brom must add their goal threat in January

While a striker is always going to be your main source of goals, Carlos Corberan’s side have an unhealthy reliance on Maja to win them games. However, he can only work with the level of service he receives which for large parts of the season has been underwhelming.

Players like John Swift, Grady Diangana and Mikey Johnston have all failed to have a regular influence in the final third with Tom Fellows their only other regular source of goal contributions with seven assists.

Their 10-game unbeaten run shows how hard they are to break down but the nine draws in that period is a major concern for a side with aspirations of reaching the Championship playoffs come the end of the campaign.

While Gelhardt would add to the quality of their attacking lineup, the Baggies would still need more. Goals from wide areas have been nominal and avoiding defeat to West Brom is just a case of preventing a chance for Maja which many teams have been able to do.

Failure to add to their goal threat in January would likely end those playoff hopes and set the Baggies up for another Championship campaign.
