Ex-West Brom star agrees out-of-window terms at London club

Former West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers has signed for AFC Wimbledon on a one-month contract.

The Dons announced on 5 December that they had agreed a deal with the 33-year-old in an out-of-window deal.

This move comes five years after signing for the Baggies for £3million [Sky Sports] and just two years after leaving for Cardiff City on a free contract.

Former West Brom ace Romaine Sawyers joins AFC Wimbledon

It is a surprise somewhat to see how far the St. Kitts and Nevis international has dropped from his days in the Premier League at The Hawthorns.

The midfielder had a telling impact as promotion from the Championship was secured in his debut season before having smaller role in the top division.

After relegation back to the second tier was confirmed, Albion opted to move the ex-Brentford man on and he’s never quite hit the same heights since.

Since leaving West Brom, the central midfielder has played for Stoke City on loan and Cardiff, becoming a regular with the latter during his first season.

Something changed and after just two Championship appearances last year, the former Baggie was released in the Welsh capital.

Now he’s back in the EFL once again with the Dons who currently find themselves in League Two, sitting in eighth place.

It is positive to see Sawyers land himself a new club but it is slightly bizarre he has only been handed a one-month deal despite his qualities and experience.

It would be interesting to see how the midfielder, at his peak, would have fitted into Carlos Corberan’s set up in the West Midlands.
