Darren Bent poses Carlos Corberan West Brom question amid Southampton update

Carlos Corberan should not move to Southampton from West Brom as the Premier League side are irretrievable this season, according to Darren Bent.

Bent, speaking with Andy Goldstein live on talkSPORT [18 December, 17:20], believes Albion fans should not be worried about their boss’ latest Premier League link as Southampton are “gone” this season.

The former striker added that the two clubs could swap divisions at the end of the campaign, with Saints currently nine points adrift with Russell Martin given his marching orders, while the Baggies sit eighth in the Championship.

“I like Corberan, he’s very pragmatic. The only reason why it’s a difficult question is because [West Brom and Southampton] could be swapping positions,” Bent explained.

“In four or five months’ time, they could swap. I don’t know why you would leave for a side that’s bottom of the Premier League. Southampton are gone, they’re gone.”

West Brom endure more Corberan exit links

Whether it has been Leicester City, Southampton or even their bitter rivals Wolves, West Brom supporters have had to attempt to play down their fears over their in-demand manager.

Corberan would command compensation for his club and as ever appears settled at The Hawthorns, though did exhibit some frustration over the summer transfer window as restrictions were placed on Shilen Patel and the board’s spending, while experienced heads departed for pastures new.

To see the 41-year-old swap the Baggies for St Mary’s would be an even crueller blow considering it was Southampton who ended his side’s promotion push last season in the play-off semi-finals.

Another coach heavily linked to the South Coast is Danny Rohl of Sheffield Wednesday, with many of the view that even were Saints to return straight to the Championship, they would instantly become promotion favourites with a sizeable budget for the level.
