Corberan West Brom exit news as Romano posts Southampton update today

West Brom supporters will again be feeling a lucky escape as Carlos Corberan is shunned by Southampton in favour of Ivan Juric.

As reported on X by Fabrizio Romano [20 December], Saints will be appointing Juric as their new manager to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked hours after their 5-0 home thrashing by Tottenham on 15 December.

The Croatian was previously in charge of Roma but was sacked after just 12 games by The Friedkin Group, who have this week completed a takeover of fellow English club Everton.

Corberan will remain at The Hawthorns for the foreseeable future, having been linked with several Premier League switches throughout the first half of the season including a supposed contract offer from Saints [AS, 19 December].

West Brom survive with Corberan for another day

Southampton are deploying a high-risk strategy appointing Juric, whose stock has arguably dropped following his underwhelming short stint in Rome.

This will be the 49-year-old’s first managerial job outside of Italy, increasing the challenge further as opposed to Corberan, 41, who has enjoyed the bulk of his high-profile coaching career in English football.

Albion live to fight another day with the Spaniard, who appears to be included on the list of candidates for any Premier League club who part company with their manager. Leicester City were first, then came bitter rivals Wolves – that one would not have gone down well at all.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy and now Vitor Pereira in their respective posts at those Midlands clubs, Juric will be the latest to try his hand at an unlikely Premier League survival mission.

As for the Baggies, where Corberan still appears to be content and has never agitated for what could be perceived a step up in his career, they will be looking to rekindle some winning form, having dropped out of the Championship play-offs following far too many draws this season.

There is at least one less distraction swirling around The Hawthorns in Southampton’s choice to opt elsewhere – they were also heavily linked with Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who is believed to have been open to the move to St Mary’s.

Corberan would require compensation to be prised from West Brom, which boosts the hand of chairman Shilen Patel, but there will be certain clubs willing to pay it further down the line if the pragmatic operator fits a desired identity.
