Danny Murphy horribly misinformed over West Brom and Morgan Rogers

Danny Murphy completely disregarded West Brom in a horribly misinformed take on Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers.

The 22-year-old has become a star at Villa Park this season, with Baggies loanee Mason Holgate lauding his displays for the Champions League side.

However, in an ill-conceived attack on Manchester City, Murphy committed a huge blunder in his column for the Daily Mail on Sunday [22 December, pg87] by claiming Rogers hailed from the City academy.

Writing: “When Villa signed Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers from Everton and Middlesbrough, there wasn’t any great fanfare, yet City would love their type of in their own team right now.

“It’s ironic that Rogers started out at the City academy yet, like Cole Palmer, has had to move on to get his chance.”

West Brom will rue letting Morgan Rogers slip

While the England international did ply his trade for the reigning Premier League champions, he arrived in Manchester via the West Midlands.

Rogers joined Albion at the Under-9s level and spent nine years in the academy before impressing against Manchester City in an FA Youth Cup semi-final and made the switch having never made a senior appearance for West Brom.

However, his short career has since taken him to West Midlands rivals Aston Villa, wherein he has established himself as a key player for the Champions League outfit.

The Baggies, on the other hand, have slipped out of the playoff spots in the Championship down to eighth after the 2-1 loss against Watford last time out.

Carlos Corberan has drawn 11 out of his 21 outings in the league this year, and his men have only managed to score 21 goals, which is the second-lowest tally among the top ten sides.

Furthermore, top goalscorer Josh Maja could be in line for a January exit from The Hawthorns with his 12 goal contributions this year attracting interest from La Liga.

Corberan should use Rogers as a precautionary tale ahead of the January transfer window – with goals so far and few between for West Brom – the Spaniard might as well kiss goodbye to his promotion aspirations if he sanctions a midseason exit for Maja.
