Graham Potter may have love for West Brom as he's tipped for new manager role

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman has labelled the potential appointment of Graham Potter at West Brom as "unrealistic" despite his history of having played for the Baggies.

Following Carlos Corberan's exit from The Hawthorns, the search for his successor has been initiated with a swift resolution required for the Baggies.

One name that was thrown up by supporters was Potter, who has been out of work since departing Chelsea in 2023 but Goodman exclusively told West Brom News that it would be an "idealistic" appointment.

"There are obvious names out there with proven Championship pedigree," explained Goodman. "I'm not going to throw, you know, David Moyes or a Graham Potter in there. That just really simply wouldn't be realistic.

"Why would Graham Potter drop to the Championship? No, it's just not realistic. It's idealistic. He may have a little bit of love in his heart for West Bromwich Albion, but when you're making decisions like that, it can't be a factor.

"Some of the jobs that he's turned down with respect would have been slightly more attractive than West Bromwich Albion. So, it's not a sort of unison that I can see happening."

West Brom need to move fast in appointing their next manager

Following a poor run of form, the Baggies are starting to slip away from promotion contention and the longer the search for Corberan's successor goes on, the weaker their chances become.

John Heitinga emerged as the favourite for the job but several other managers have been linked with the position.

Potter would be a remarkable appointment but given his history in management, a job in the Championship for a side chasing a top-six finish would be ludicrous when he would undoubtedly have top-level suitors.

The Baggies remain an attractive prospect and while they will be able to attract a manager with a certain pedigree, they have to remain realistic.

Shooting too high will do nothing but slow the progress and have a knock-on effect for the remainder of the campaign.
