Plymouth new manager: Ex-West Brom boss in running after Wayne Rooney bombshell
Former West Brom manager Sam Allardyce is in contention for the Plymouth job after Wayne Rooney was sacked, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
The former Manchester United striker was relieved of his duties on Tuesday (31 December) after just one win in the last 14 Championship matches.
Allardyce is a shock contender for the vacancy, with Gambling.com ranking the former Baggies boss as the ninth-favourite for the role at odds of 10/1.
Stockport County boss Dave Challinor is the 6/4 favourite to succeed Rooney, with Steven Schumacher at 7/4 and Steve Cooper at 5/2.
Ex-West Brom man Allardyce not likely to take Plymouth job
At 10/1, it is unlikely that the former Albion man will be approached by the Championship bottom-dwellers after Rooney was sacked.
The former Bolton Wanderers manager left The Hawthorns after suffering the first-ever relegation from the Premier League of his career in the 2020-2021 season.
He is a veteran of the English game having managed 12 clubs across a managerial career spanning 31 years including nine different top flight clubs including Newcastle United, West Ham and Everton.

Allardyce does have a remarkable record when managing in the second tier of English football, his last three seasons in the division have brought two promotions and a playoff berth.
However, at 70 years old it is unlikely that he will want to return to management, especially at a club that is rooted to the bottom of the Championship.
Plymouth are four points from safety and have the worst goal difference in the league with a dismal return of minus 29, it will be a huge task for a manager to turn that around.
