West Brom new manager: Luke Williams odds slashed after major Swansea shock

Luke Williams is increasingly likely to be named as the new West Brom manager, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

SkyBet made Williams, 44, the favourite to be appointed as Carlos Corberan’s successor on 31 December and since then, they’ve slashed his odds from 9/4 to 6/5.

On 2 January, the former Notts County manager was made the resounding favourite with Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga next in the running at 5/1. John Eustace (6/1), Steven Schumacher (8/1) and Russell Martin (10/1) are also listed.

West Brom closer to Williams hire after Swansea shock

Swansea lost 4-0 to relegation-threatened Portsmouth on New Year’s Day, leading to Williams admitting after the game that it’s unlikely West Brom will want him after that.

As quoted by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook on 1 January, the Swans boss said: “I’m not sure they want my future to be here after just watching that performance. I certainly haven’t had any contact from West Brom.”

However, despite Swansea’s shock defeat to Portsmouth and Williams’ denial, Albion insider DOOD is adamant that the Black Country club is in talks with the London-born manager’s agent.

Williams is unlikely to be a popular choice for Baggies fans given the fact he’s only ever won promotion once in his managerial career, and that was with a superior Notts County side in the National League in 2023.

At Swansea, he’s lost more games than he’s won and the Welsh side sit in 12th place, six points behind the Baggies in sixth.

Williams is also a fan of attacking, possession-based football, which is the polar opposite to what Corberan employed at The Hawthorns.

While that might be the kind of manager Shilen Patel and Andrew Nestor want, making such a drastic change to philosophy midway through a season could prove disastrous.

In other West Brom news, Albion are ready to accept a £9.9million bid for this player in January.
