Luke Williams admits West Brom ‘shock’ in Swansea press conference on Friday

Luke Williams admits he hasn’t had any contacts to become the next West Brom manager.

The Swansea boss has expressed shock at being linked with the vacancy in The Hawthorns dugout to succeed Carlos Corberan, who left for Valencia in December.

Williams can’t comprehend why the bookmakers have associated him with the Baggies.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference [WalesOnline, 3 January] as the Swans take on The Albion, the 44-year-old head coach said: I was perhaps the last to know. I’m not on social media, so I don’t have a big network. It has all come as a bit of a shock.

“There’s been no contact whatsoever. So I’m not sure how it’s got to the level it got to with the bookmakers deciding I was halfway down the road.”

Luke Williams will not be the next West Brom manager

It’s safe to say now that Williams won’t be taking over the Black Country club in the coming weeks.

Swansea are six points behind the Baggies in the Championship table and could be considered a direct rival.

The English manager would not do himself any favours with the Swans faithful if he took the West Brom job in January.

Chris Brunt won his first game as the interim head coach against Preston at home on New Year’s Day.

The Northern Irishman must ensure that the West Midlands club are in and around the play-offs spots before the new manager arrives with another win over Williams’ team on Saturday (4 January).

Corberan made impressive progress at the Black Country outfit after taking over from Steve Bruce, and the Baggies were in with a chance of promotion to the Premier League last season.

The Hawthorns faithful expect their team to challenge once again and hopefully achieve English top flight status.

Williams is seemingly out of the race, so all eyes will be on Shilen Patel, who has a big decision to make.
