Paul Merson makes Sky Sports studio laugh at next West Brom manager possibility

Paul Merson made the Sky Sports studio laugh live on air after what he said about the vacant West Brom manager’s job.

The Baggies are searching for a new manager after Carlos Corberan left for Valencia over Christmas, with Chris Brunt taking the reins until a permanent figure is appointed.

Steven Schumacher, formerly of Stoke City, has emerged as the second-favourite candidate according to the bookies’ odds.

He is also reportedly in the running to succeed Wayne Rooney at League One-bound Plymouth Argyle, and Merson was asked live on Sky Sports News [4 January, 12:41pm] where he can see Schumacher ending up.

Merson sarcastically said: “Well which job do you take – Plymouth or West Brom?”

The likes of Michael Dawson, Clinton Morrison and Soccer Saturday host Simon Thomas found that funny as the realisation of what a silly question it was sunk in.

Will West Brom appoint Steven Schumacher?

The answer is West Brom.

Plymouth are rooted at the foot of the Championship table after Manchester United hero Rooney was dismissed on New Year’s Eve [talkSPORT, 31 December].

While the Pilgrims are looking destined for League One football next year, Albion are back in playoff contention after moving up to fifth place following the 3-1 win against Preston North End on Wednesday (1 January).

The result has eased the tension at The Hawthorns, and Shilen Patel is prepared to take the appropriate time to appoint the perfect replacement for Corberan [DOOD].

Luke Williams was mooted to be a leading candidate, but those rumours have since been quashed, with the Swansea City boss committing his future to remain in South Wales.

West Brom

Schumacher is more likely to find his next position in Plymouth rather than West Brom after he was dismissed at Stoke following two wins out of five at the beginning of the season after narrowly surviving relegation the year prior.

Plenty of names are linked to becoming the new leader at The Hawthorns, and Schumacher certainly should not be one of them.
