West Brom in hot pursuit of ‘forgotten’ Rangers ace in cut-price deal

West Brom are keen to seal a January transfer for out-of-contract Rangers right-back Alfie Devine, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported on his Patreon page (5 January) that with Devine’s deal at Ibrox expiring in the summer, Albion are looking at bringing him to The Hawthorns six months early for a cut-price fee.

Devine, has appeared 11 times for Rangers since his debut under Michael Beale back 2021, but the 21-year-old is out of favour under current manager Philippe Clement and is yet to feature this season.

Darnell Furlong remains a stalwart for the Baggies at right-back and is committed to them for the long-term, but the Hawthorns hierarchy are keen on strengthening in his position this month.

West Brom ready to strengthen with Alfie Devine January transfer

As a right-back with plenty of potential despite being on the periphery at Ibrox, Devine would still be a welcome addition to the Baggies’ squad as Shilen Patel looks to strengthen in the promotion race.

While the Albion remain managerless at the time of writing despite many fans believing an appointment is imminent, whoever does take charge would certainly welcome more squad depth in defence.

The final weeks of Carlos Corberan’s tenure were marked by a pile-up of injuries at the back, with Paddy McNair’s loan ending abruptly, Semi Ajayi still out and Kyle Bartley only recently returning to full fitness.

Mason Holgate, signed as versatile defensive cover, has been used almost exclusively in central defence as a result, with Darnell Furlong the only out-and-out right-back currently on the books permanently.

Bringing in Devine for a bargain price would not only provide Furlong with competition, but would also grant Albion’s next manager with a depth of rearguard options which Corberan was rarely afforded.
