West Brom new manager: Marti Cifuentes name thrown up after QPR development

West Brom should make a move for QPR manager Marti Cifuentes after the Loftus Road side beat Watford, according to Joe Chapman.

The Spanish boss guided his side to a 3-1 victory on New Year’s Day (1 January) and are six points clear of the drop zone prior to hosting Luton Town on Monday (6 January).

He is yet to be linked with the Baggies job after Carlos Corberan departed for Valencia on Christmas Eve but Chapman would want to see an approach made.

Responding to a post about the Hoops manager potentially being on the shortlist, the journalist said in a post on X: “He’d be right towards the top of my wishlist, finances permitting.”

Cifuentes would be a good hire for West Brom

The 42-year-old has a 32.79 win percentage at Loftus Road but that does not tell the full story about his managerial abilities.

The Spanish manager employed a pragmatic approach to guide Rangers to safety last season, ensuring survival with a game to spare, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Albion have a much better squad at their disposal than the side that he currently manages and Cifuentes may be able to get the best out of them.

In his reign at Hammarby in Sweden, he employed a possession-based approach that was defensively solid and fluid in attack and probably represents a better example of what his potential Baggies side would look like.

It would be an exciting appointment as his stock has not dropped despite a relatively disappointing reign at a struggling side in the Championship.

He is probably a big outsider for the job at The Hawthorns but he is exactly the kind of gamble that Albion should be looking towards.
