West Brom new manager: Swiss boss Raphael Wicky emerges out of the blue
Raphael Wicky has emerged out of nowhere in the running to be the new West Brom manager, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
SkyBet have installed the 47-year-old Swiss manager as third-favourite at 3/1. His name wasn’t listed among the front-runners on Sunday morning (5 January).
Wicky, a former Switzerland international, has managerial experience from spells in charge of Basel, Chicago Fire and BSC Young Boys.
Who is West Brom manager contender Raphael Wicky?
Wicky’s name is unlikely to be one many Baggies fans will have heard of.
In his playing days, he earned 75 caps for Switzerland and played in the midfield for teams like Werder Bremen, Atletico Madrid, Hamburg and Sion.
He rose through the ranks in youth coaching at Thun, Servette and Basel in his native Switzerland before being made the main man in charge at Basel in 2017.

After a rather unsuccessful spell there, besides a Champions League win over Manchester United, he went back into youth coaching with the USA Under-17s team before taking charge of Chicago Fire in the MLS. He was there for just over a year before being sacked in September 2021.
Wicky’s most successful stint came at Young Boys.
In charge of the Bern club, he won the Swiss double in 2022/23 before leaving them in 2024.
Could he now be Carlos Corberan’s replacement at The Hawthorns?
