Sky Sports share Thursday morning update on new West Brom manager

West Brom have narrowed their search for a new manager with Rene Hake and Raphael Wicky both still firmly in the running, according to Sky Sports.

Sky Sports News editor Lyall Thomas posted on X (9 January) to report that the Baggies are down to their final few candidates for Carlos Corberan’s successor, as Hake and Wicky remain in contention.

Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace, the previous favourite to take the job, is no longer thought to be in the running at The Hawthorns, while ex-Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer‘s odds have also widened.

Thomas said: “Rene Hake and Raphael Wicky both remain in the running for the West Brom job as club get down to final few candidates to succeed Carlos Corberan.”

Corberan leaving The Hawthorns for Valencia on Christmas Eve threatened to derail the Albion’s entire season, but Chris Brunt, Boaz Myhill and their thrown-together team have steadied the ship since.

Recording a win, loss and two draws over the festive period, Brunt and co have set the Baggies up to continue their promotion push in the second half of the season, regardless of who is in the dugout.

That record would read two wins rather than draws had a Swansea City side led by Luke Williams – heavily linked with the Albion vacancy in the build-up – not equalised at the death last time out.

Turning around the Baggies’ high tendency to draw matches – having already recorded 13 in their 26 games so far this term – will be the biggest task at hand for whoever becomes their new manager.

Whether it’s Wicky, Hake, or another candidate who pitches up to succeed Corberan at The Hawthorns, it’s been made fairly clear by Shilen Patel that a new appointment is close to completion.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are keen on signing a “forgotten” man from one of the UK’s biggest clubs this month.
