Tony Mowbray holding several different discussions with West Brom over their managerial vacancy is a "sensational" development, according to Jonny Drury.

The Express and Star reported on 11 January that having not been in the running to replace Carlos Corberan just weeks ago, the Baggies' position changed and Mowbray held tentative talks this week.

However, it is claimed that Mowbray feels the time is not right to take on the job given his recent health scare [Charlie Haffenden 10 January].

Express and Star journalist Drury reacted to the news on X (11 January), acknowledging the magnitude of Mowbray's potential return to The Hawthorns, having won the Championship title in his first spell.

Drury said: "A few more details, over the sensational line that Mowbray held discussions with Albion officials. [He] Wasn't in the frame a few weeks ago but that changed in recent days."

Tony Mowbray twist emerges in West Brom job search

Almost three weeks have past since Corberan announced that he'd be departing the West Midlands to head for pastures new at Valencia, but Albion have not rushed finding his replacement.

Owner Shilen Patel has expressed his gratitude at the job done in the interregnum by Chris Brunt, Boaz Myhill and other backroom staff, but fans feel an appointment should be made sooner rather than later.

Mowbray emerging as a late contender to succeed Corberan, following almost a year out of management due to health problems, would certainly have been a popular development in the eyes of Baggies supporters.

With John Eustace and Luke Williams now both seemingly out of the running, and Raphael Wicky or Rene Hake yet to be appointed, the door remained open for Mowbray to make a sensational return.

However, it is clear Mowbray does not feel the time is right to return to The Hawthorns, and it is Wicky who remains the clear frontrunner to take charge.
