West Brom next manager: Don Goodman makes new Chris Brunt claim

Don Goodman believes the good work by Chris Brunt as interim boss at West Brom bought the board some additional time to find their Carlos Corberan successor.

The wait for a managerial appointment goes on for West Brom, with Raphael Wicky in line to become the new boss at The Hawthorns [Sky Sports].

Wicky is said to have already signed off on several plans in terms of recruitment and youth investment, with an appointment seemingly imminent.

However, West Brom have done their due diligence with Goodman exclusively telling West Brom News that the work achieved by Brunt and his team allowed for more time to be invested into the appointment process.

“I think the fact that the trio of lads that looked after the team did so well, apart from the first half against Derby County, bought them some time,” explained Goodman.

“They kept things going, really, in a way that you possibly doubt Carlos Corberan would have done any better, really.

So I think that bought the hierarchy a little bit of time. I don’t think they needed to rush anything. And you probably shouldn’t rush these decisions. But ultimately, I don’t think the club are any worse off by taking their time.

“I just think that, obviously, the 5-1 FA Cup defeat has probably compounded that a little bit and makes it look worse than it was.”

Chris Brunt has kept West Brom in Championship promotion race

Ultimately, the main job for Brunt was to help the Baggies maintain their push for a playoff spot and so far, he has managed just that.

Their FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth shouldn’t be used as a distraction from the excellent job they have done under fairly challenging circumstances given the timing of Corberan’s departure.

However, with the pending appointment of Wicky, West Brom may have found their ideal replacement, with the ex-Basel boss seen as a manager capable of building on the foundations left by the Spaniard.
