Tony Mowbray return: West Brom now in advanced talks to hire new manager

West Brom are in advanced talks to appoint former boss Tony Mowbray, according to Ben Jacobs.

The GiveMeSport journalist reported the latest update via X (17 January) after Alex Crook initially reported that the Baggies remain “optimistic” in reinstating Mowbray at The Hawthorns.

Mowbray is ready to return to management after leaving Birmingham City in February last year, after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and could be heading back to the West Midlands.

Tony Mowbray to return to West Brom

It has been a hectic couple of weeks for West Brom supporters.

Since Carlos Corberan departed for Valencia, so many names have been linked to the vacant manager job at the Hawthorns, with a few even coming close to securing the position.

Interim boss Chris Brunt has done well to hold down the fort in the meantime, picking up a win and a draw against Preston North End and Swansea City to keep the Baggies firmly in the playoff hunt.

Although Brunt suffered a crushing 5-1 loss against Bournemouth in the FA Cup, the result is not an indication of his performance as interim caretaker but more a damning reminder of how much work is left to be done at The Hawthorns before they are ready for the Premier League.

However, once Shilen Patel’s intentions of biding his time in the search were revealed [DOOD], not many would have predicted how long it would take for the owner to find his man – but the wait appears to be over.

All the signs are positive for Mowbray’s return to the West Midlands, his odds have slashed overnight, and better yet, his appointment would undoubtedly lift the mood at West Brom ahead of a promotion push.

It remains to be seen whether Albion will get this deal over the line after several failed attempts with alternative targets – fingers crossed the saga is nearing its end.
