Kris Boyd shares instant West Brom promotion verdict after Mowbray news

West Brom could secure promotion after re-appointing Tony Mowbray, according to Kris Boyd.

The 61-year-old returned to The Hawthorns on Friday (17 January) almost 16 years after he left to manage Celtic and watched the 1-1 draw against Stoke on Saturday.

It is his first time back in management after being forced to step away from his role as Birmingham boss due to bowel cancer treatment in February.

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (18 January, 13:25 pm), Boyd sent a warning to the Championship, saying: “By the way, he has got a chance of another promotion.

“He will think if he goes in there and gets a few results, they can get themselves back in the playoffs and kick on from there.

“Don’t rule them out because there is one thing about Toby Mowbray and the Championship, he knows how to navigate through that division.”

West Brom can kick on after Mowbray appointment

Albion had been searching for a new man in the dugout since Carlos Corberan departed for Valencia on Christmas Day with the likes of Raphael Wicky and Rene Hake missing out.

Chris Brunt has done an admirable job in an interim role but the uncertainty was beginning to affect the Midlands club’s winter transfer window plans.

With Mowbray now appointed, the Baggies can now consult their new coach about transfer targets and shape the squad for a playoff push.

The Black Country club are currently seventh in the Championship table, behind Middlesbrough and Blackburn with important games to come.

However, with 20 matches still to play, there is plenty of time for the Baggies to force their way into the end-of-the-season showdown under their new boss.

Mowbray getting the club promoted to the Premier League after his recent health troubles and his triumphant return would be poetic.
