Tony Mowbray: Darren Bent shares major concern over West Brom appointment

Darren Bent is not fully sold on the idea of Tony Mowbray returning as West Brom manager due to his recent health issues.

The 61-year-old was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which saw him resign from his post at Birmingham City in March 2024, but he has now been officially announced as the new manager at The Hawthorns.

Albion have been without a permanent manager since Carlos Corberan’s departure to Valencia, but with movement finally emerging for the Baggies, Bent has shared his worries about the potential hire.

Speaking live via talkSPORT [17 January, 6:44pm], Bent said: “They would [the fans would be happy] but I just hope he’s okay. I spent a large spell with him at Ipswich, as a player and a coach, and he’s a fantastic person.

“You just want to make sure he’s okay. I know he’s been given the all-clear, which is fantastic, but football is a stressful environment.”

Tony Mowbray concerns emerge at West Brom

Bent’s reaction is far more emotional than anything else. If Mowbray has been given the green light to return to football, there is no reason why the Baggies should not have hired him.

David Moyes’ return to Everton is one of the most recent romantic hires in football, and Mowbray’s return to The Hawthorns will be another one of those reunions.

West Brom are in desperate need of a permanent leader because, while Chris Brunt has done himself no harm as a temporary figure, the club needs stability right now.

Now sitting one point outside of the Championship play-off spots, the Baggies’ recent run of results has been far from ideal, something which has seen them slip down the table.

With Josh Maja on the treatment table after scoring 12 goals in 26 games, Mowbray will need to find an alternative for the Baggies’ attack, with Karlan Grant the next-highest scorer with six.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are in a bid to sign Isaac Price, a player who is set to jet into the UK on Monday.
