Jeff Stelling reacts as Ally McCoist shares ‘Best news’ straight from West Brom

Tony Mowbray being back in management at West Brom was “the best news of the weekend”, Ally McCoist has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (20 January, 6:53am), McCoist and Jeff Stelling discussed Mowbray’s return to The Hawthorns, having successfully fought off bowel cancer.

Described as one of the “good guys”, Mowbray’s managerial and playing credentials were praised by the duo, after he watched the 1-1 draw with Stoke which Albion came close to winning.

McCoist said: “Brilliant, that’s maybe the best news of the weekend, isn’t it Jeff? Magic.”

“One of the game’s true good guys, and a blooming good manager as well”, Stelling replied.

McCoist added: “Great guy, hardy boy as well – I played against him a number of times – a hardy boy was the big fella, I like him a lot.”

Tony Mowbray hire a universally popular move by West Brom

Albion’s search for a new manager looked set to go on forever as they looked from pillar to post for Carlos Corberan’s successor, with the post left unfilled for nearly a month after his exit on Christmas Eve.

However, having seen a deal with Raphael Wicky break down and then Rene Hake distance himself from resuming talks of his own with the Baggies, Christmas has now come early for The Hawthorns faithful.

Mowbray led Albion to their last piece of silverware in the form of the Championship title back in 2008 and having also taken them to Wembley, Baggies fans will be daring to dream once again.

While The Hawthorns has seen two spells of Premier League football since the 61-year-old’s departure in 2009, few eras in the club’s recent history have generated such a feel-good buzz about The Hawthorns.

Mowbray’s own fight with bowel cancer is inspirational enough in itself, but if he can invoke the spirit of 2008 and take Albion back to the promised land, there’ll be plenty of other clubs‘ fans happy for them.

In other West Brom news, Albion legend Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown slammed a “terrible” moment for one player against Stoke City.
