Tony Brown names West Brom transfer desperation after what he saw v Middlesbrough
Tony Brown feels as though West Brom are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements during the winter transfer window after their display against Middlesbrough.
The Baggies travelled to the Riverside Stadium for their first game under Tony Mowbray’s second tenure but came away with a 2-0 loss at his former side on Tuesday (21 January).
Although Albion had 14 shots in the game, just one of those was on target as they continue to adapt to life without Josh Maja, who is on the sidelines through injury.
Doing live commentary on the game for BBC Radio WM (21 January), Brown argued his former side urgently need a replacement as he said: “In the second half West Brom came out and gave it a go, and they had all the possession for long spells. But Albion couldn’t get that all-important equaliser that would have put them back in the game.
“It is an issue for them at the moment – scoring goals, we talked about losing Josh Maja meaning they have no focal point, which you need desperately, to play off them and get high up the pitch.
“Albion have had a go, but Middlesbrough have got that second goal and killed the game off.”
West Brom need a Josh Maja replacement
Mowbray will be hoping he can take his side to the play-offs this term but if he is going to do so, attacking reinforcement will certainly be needed to boost the efforts of his squad.
Maja is facing an extended period on the sidelines through injury and being the Baggies’ top scorer this term with 12 goals means there has to be someone else in the squad who can match his contribution.
As all-time Albion top scorer, supporters at The Hawthorns will wish they had a Brown-like player on their hands this season who would no doubt provide the force needed upfront to keep up the momentum until the end of the campaign.

Nevertheless, it seems as though the manager is well aware of the job that lies in front of him with the Black Country outfit having been linked with a move for young Liverpool forward Jayden Danns [DOOD, 21 January].
Whether this one happens or not will have to be seen but the performance against Middlesbrough will have made Mowbray even more keen to bring in a new striker as soon as possible.
