Jed Wallace hailed after what he did in West Brom defeat v Plymouth

Alvin Martin was wowed by Jed Wallace after his work to assist Jayson Molumby as West Brom crashed to defeat at Plymouth.

Speaking on talkSPORT 2 (1 February, 2:02pm), the former England international gave all the credit to Wallace as he dispossessed a defender to give Molumby an easy finish in the 2-1 defeat at Home Park.

Albion suffered an immediate Plymouth backlash from the penalty spot before the hosts went on to turn it around with a late winner at the death, as Tony Mowbray suffered his first defeat as Baggies boss.

Martin said: “It comes from a mistake, but I just want to praise Jed Wallace here.

“You’ve got to have real intelligence, for holding onto a ball, picking out the right ball, and not panicking, and that’s what happened.

“He came out with it, he waited and waited and waited, and picked the right opportunity before sliding it right in front for him.”

Jed Wallace justifies Mowbray faith in West Brom v Plymouth

Wallace’s place in the Baggies’ starting XI  has been under a cloud for much of this season, with the 30-year-old often restricted to second-half cameos off the bench.

Tom Fellows’ form on the right flank had kept the captain out of the side for all but two of the opening 26 matches, but he’s been back in business since Mowbray made his sensational return.

Wallace has also borne the brunt of fan criticism for not providing a step-up in quality off the bench – quite the opposite in fact – particularly when compared to the uber-popular performances of Fellows.

However, having been restored to the starting XI in a makeshift striking role following Josh Maja’s injury, Wallace has discovered a new lease of life in attack, including against Plymouth for Molumby’s opener.

Albion going on to lose 2-1 at Home Park will undoubtedly be one of the shock results of the Championship weekend, but Mowbray will at least be glad to have his captain back in form.
