Tony Mowbray rages over West Brom controversy v Plymouth on Sky Sports
Tony Mowbray was left fuming with the decision to award Plymouth a penalty in their 2-1 victory over West Brom on Saturday.
The Baggies fell to a late 2-1 defeat at Home Park on 1 February courtesy of a horror decision from the officials which saw Callum Styles penalised for a handball inside the penalty area.
Ryan Hardie dispatched the penalty easily in the 88th minute, securing a first win in 16 for Argyle, but Mowbray wasn’t best pleased with the decision.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mowbray said: “At the end of the day, [Styles] was two yards away and the lad’s lashed it and it’s hit him. What do you want the guy to do?
“Did [the referee] think he had enough time to get his hand out to stop it or if he’s trying to make his body bigger, I understand it but I spoke to the fourth official who was bewildered by it.
“I always say to my teams, that however much domination you have, you can always get beat by a poor decision from an official. It felt a bit like that today.”
West Brom can feel hard done by but need to improve
While the game was decided by the controversial penalty, the Baggies did little to warrant winning the game and although there are reasons for that, improvement is needed.
The recent signing of Will Lankshear could be a remedy to that, with West Brom evidently lacking the presence of a number nine top to hold the ball up and link the play, two areas that Lanskhear thrives.
West Brom dominated possession, perhaps as expected, but just lacked that decisive touch in the final third and if that is to change, more needs to come from the likes of Mikey Johnston and Tom Fellows who have the ability to rectify that.

The defeat could see the Baggies temporarily fall out of the top six but with a long time still to go in the season, that doesn’t alter the end goal.
West Brom still have more than enough to secure a play-off spot but that may hinge on their ability to secure some additional quality before the 3 February deadline.
