Tony Mowbray key as West Brom make Adam Armstrong transfer approach

West Brom have made a loan enquiry for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong as the transfer deadline approaches, according to DOOD.

The reliable Albion outlet posted on X (3 February) that the Baggies are one of three clubs keen on signing the Saints forward, who played under Tony Mowbray during his time at Blackburn Rovers.

Albion’s enquiry for Armstrong, who fired Southampton to promotion in last season’s play-off final, was for a straight loan before 11 pm tonight.

Adam Armstrong transfer could transform West Brom attack

Armstrong’s scoring record in the EFL is absolutely bulletproof, and it’s no surprise to see the Baggies keen on bringing him to The Hawthorns if Southampton are willing to let their number nine leave.

In four seasons under Mowbray at Blackburn, Armstrong netted nine, five, 16 and 28 goals across League One and the Championship, with the latter in 2020/21 the best-scoring campaign of his career.

Having scored just twice in 20 Premier League appearances since Southampton’s ill-fated promotion, Armstrong coming back down to the Championship could be exactly what an ambitious Albion need.

Josh Maja – currently the Championship’s joint second-top goalscorer – remains on the sidelines nursing what at first seemed to just be a knock, and that’s left the Baggies short up front.

Mowbray’s return to the Hawthorns last month has been universally popular, but if he brings in Armstrong to score the goals which take them up, both men’s places in Albion folklore will be assured.

In other West Brom news, Albion are planning to sanction three exits from The Hawthorns as the transfer deadline approaches.
