Ben Foster sends message as West Brom finalise multi-million deal

Ben Foster has sent a message of support after Alex Palmer’s exit was confirmed by West Brom.

The shot-stopper joined Premier League side Ipswich Town before the winter transfer window closed on 3 February, leaving The Hawthorns in a deal understood to be worth an initial £2million [Sky Sports].

Having come through the Albion academy, earning his first senior appearance in August 2021 before playing 103 more times, it was an emotional exit for the 28-year-old.

Reacting to the star’s goodbye message on Instagram [4 February], Foster, who played 223 times for the Baggies, wrote: “Good luck, Palms. Proper ‘keeper.”

Alex Palmer shock exit emerges at West Brom

Well-known mainly for his time at The Hawthorns and Watford, and more recently Wrexham, Foster will know just how massive a chance for the shot-stopper this is.

With Ipswich looking to secure safety in the Premier League, Palmer has a chance to prove himself in the top tier of English football after becoming a much-loved figure in the Midlands.

Supporters were shocked when news of his potential exit emerged on deadline day but considering his performances over the last couple of seasons, it should really come as no surprise.

Luckily for the Baggies, they have been able to recall 23-year-old Josh Griffiths from his season-long loan at Bristol Rovers, though it seems a bit of a risky call at this point in the season.

Tony Mowbray will be doing absolutely everything to secure a Championship play-off spot this season, and the team are just about in sixth place on goal difference.

Losing one of the league’s best goalkeepers halfway through the campaign will surely have a major impact on the team but the Baggies can still push forward.

Only James Trafford, Illan Meslier and Michael Cooper have more clean sheets than Palmer this season, having also joint-won the Golden Glove last term, so it leaves big shoes to fill at The Hawthorns.
