Sheffield Wednesday face ‘harsh’ punishment after West Brom loss – Keith Hackett

Sheffield Wednesday could face a “harsh” punishment on the back of losing 2-1 to West Brom, according to Keith Hackett.

West Brom edged a dramatic contest at The Hawthorns on Saturday (8 February) to move up to fifth in the Championship.

However, it was not all good news for the Baggies as Kyle Bartley was issued a red card after the full-time whistle for raising his arm in the face of Svante Ingelsson.

That led to both sets of players clashing on the field while the celebrations were still going on in The Hawthorns stands.

West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday face FA investigation

In the view of former West Brom staff member Pat Frost, that could potentially see Bartley hit with an extended suspension.

And as confirmed by former FIFA and Premier League referee Hackett, it may well be that both teams are charged with failing to control their players after matters boiled over at full-time.

“The striking offence after the final whistle, along with any player misconduct, will be investigated by the FA,” Hackett told West Brom News.

“I expect both clubs to be charged with failure to control their players, which would appear harsh on the away team.”

Kyle Bartley set to miss key run of West Brom games

Should Bartley be hit with the regulatory three-match ban, that will see him miss games against Blackburn Rovers, Millwall and Oxford United.

An extension to that ban, should the FA deem that necessary, could potentially see him sit out matches with Leeds United and QPR beyond that.

Quite why Bartley felt the need to take matters into his own hands, almost quite literally, is anyone’s guess.

The points were in the bag and it should have been a chance to celebrate with his team-mates and supporters.

Tony Mowbray was no doubt furious at the experienced defender, who was slammed by pundit Luke Chambers for his “absolutely ridiculous” actions.

West Brom now enter a key run of fixtures without one of their regulars, but hopefully others can step up and fill the void for Mowbray.
