West Brom fans blast Darnell Furlong in Sheffield Wednesday win — ‘Woeful’, ‘Dreadful’

Darnell Furlong did not have the best of games as West Brom won 2-1 against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

The Baggies faced the Owls at home on Saturday (8 February) as Tony Mowbray made a few changes to his starting lineup.

Joe Wildsmith started in goal, while Kye Bartley replaced Mason Holgate, who missed the fixture due to an illness.

While Tammer Bany was ruled out for the game, Adam Armstrong made an impression on his debut in front of The Hawthorns faithful as he scored, but Callum Paterson equalised at the death for the visitors.

Jayson Molumby ensured the West Midlands club took the three points with his 96th-minute improvised finish.

Darnell Furlong blasted for Sheffield Wednesday performance

Furlong had a game to forget as the 29-year-old underwhelmed fans after his defensive struggles.

One Baggies fan on X termed the right-back’s display “woeful” as he failed to keep Sheffield Wednesday’s wingers in check, while another supporter blasted him as “dreadful” for not being proactive.

Djeidi Gassama consistently got the better of the English defender, and The Albion were arguably lucky not to get the win.

There was also a suggestion from a supporter on X that Mowbray could look to replace Furlong at West Brom in the upcoming transfer window.

West Brom fans not happy after Darnell Furlong display v Sheffield Wednesday

While The Hawthorns faithful were buzzing when the right-back signed a contract extension earlier this season, it feels like the opinion around him has changed.

There have been some big changes at the Black Country outfit over the last few months, with Carlos Corberan leaving and Alex Palmer also being sold on Deadline Day.

Mowbray has had a mixed start on his return to the West Midlands club, and it remains to be seen whether the veteran head coach will be able to take them back to the Premier League.

While The Albion have been in and around the play-offs spots in the Championship table in the current c campaign, there is immense competition for places.

The Baggies had a chance to win promotion last season but lost to Southampton in the semi-final of the play-offs.

With Blackburn Rovers up next, fans will expect a better performance from Furlong if he makes the team.
