West Brom fans slammed over ‘shameful and depressing’ response to announcement on Blackburn game
West Brom supporters have been slammed for their response to an announcement made by the club on social media.
Albion posted a message on their official Facebook and X channels on Tuesday (11 February) regarding an initiative that will be in place for the visit of Blackburn Rovers.
The game takes place at The Hawthorns on Wednesday (12 February) as the Baggies look to maintain their place in the Championship playoff spots.
West Brom make announcement ahead of Blackburn Rovers match
Albion will use the visit of Blackburn to join fan group WBALGBT in supporting the Football v Homophobia campaign.
In an announcement relayed by the club’s official website, it was pointed out that Albion will promote the campaign in a number of ways, such as the players wearing special warm-up shirts.
Rainbow corner flags will also be used, while LGBTQ+ messages will be shown on the big screens at The Hawthorns.
While the majority of West Brom fans will no doubt see the campaign as a positive, that was not the case for everyone.
Indeed, BBC journalist and Albion supporter Chris Lepkowski highlighted via his personal Bluesky a number of “utterly shameful and depressing” responses to the announcement.
One supporter said that, while they are all for equality, “we don’t need reminding about everything”.
Plenty argued the case that “politics should be kept out of sport”, while another simply replied: “Focus on playing better”.
On the more extreme end of the replies highlighted, one fan said they “won’t be going to the game” against Blackburn now.
West Brom should be applauded over Football v Homophobia campaign
This campaign is EFL-wide and is one to be applauded. While some argue politics and football should not mix, this is hardly a “political” matter.

Further to the aforementioned promotions, representatives from Proud Baggies will also be flag bearers for the game, while ‘Boiler Man’ will wear a special rainbow suit to give the campaign his backing.
If that is too much for some supporters to deal with, then maybe they really should stay away.
Football truly is a sport for all, and campaigns like this ensure everyone is welcome at grounds across the country.
Ultimately, every West Brom supporter wants the same, and that is for the club to achieve its goal of earning promotion this season.
