Tony Mowbray makes West Brom injury blow admission as Dike update shared

Tony Mowbray has shared a West Brom injury update ahead of the Championship clash with Oxford United on Saturday.

Mowbray spoke in detail about Dike, who made a 13-minute cameo in West Brom’s 1-1 draw at Millwall last weekend in what was his first appearance for West Brom in over a year after two season-ending injuries.

Dike ruptured his left Achilles tendon on 12 February 2024 and numerous setbacks have restricted him from returning to first-team action sooner; that coming after doing the same to his right leg in April 2023.

West Brom are struggling to hit a consistent patch of form under Mowbray since he took charge last month, picking up two wins and losses apiece under the 61-year-old prior to Saturday’s draw at The Den.

West Brom hit with brand-new injury blow

Although Dike came through his late substitute appearance unscathed in South London, Albion skipper Jed Wallace was withdrawn injured in the 70th minute, and Mowbray provided an update on the pair.

Mowbray said at his pre-match press conference: “Daryl is still in the mode where the medical team look after him – he doesn’t train every day, they manage his minutes through the working week.

“He didn’t train today, for instance, but he’ll certainly train Friday and we’ll see how he is. We just have to keep seeing if we can get him game time from the bench as we go along for the immediate future.

“The club has put something out about Jed’s calf, which isn’t ideal – he won’t be featuring this weekend, but let’s see how long it’ll be.”

West Brom can’t catch a break on injury front

Just as West Brom get one of their attackers back from injury, another gets taken away, with Mowbray’s assessment of Wallace suggesting the Baggies’ number seven could be on the sidelines for some time.

Wallace had previously been in and out of the side under Mowbray, who juggled his various attacking options at The Hawthorns prior to Adam Armstrong’s arrival on loan from Southampton.

Understandably, Armstrong has been a fixture in the side since his Deadline Day loan move from the Premier League strugglers, but Mowbray has remained keen to rotate those around him in the front four.

Wallace, Tom Fellows, Mikey Johnston and Karlan Grant have all started out wide, with Grady Diangana being used as a makeshift striker at times prior to the signings of Armstrong and Will Lankshear.

Dike is another option once he completes his recovery, and while Mowbray is downplaying his progress, that cameo at Millwall will leave Baggies fans optimistic that the American will soon be back fit and firing.
