Don Goodman cannot believe ‘agonising’ West Brom footage v Leeds United

West Brom manager Tony Mowbray will have been left furious with an “agonising” moment in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Saturday.

The Baggies secured a solid point from the Elland Road clash (1 March) to narrowly hang on to the final Championship playoff place.

Mowbray can take a lot of encouragement from the performance, but one moment of the contest could come back to haunt the Albion.

John Swift spurns glorious chance for West Brom v Leeds

The Baggies started the game as the better side and could have taken the lead just seven minutes into it when Isaac Price set up John Swift.

However, the 29-year-old sent his effort wide as he arrived late into the Whites’ penalty area and the hosts took the lead just two minutes later.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Football (1 March, 12:38), Don Goodman was stunned by the miss, saying: “What a pass he picks out, agonising, it shouldn’t be agonising, they should be a goal ahead.”

Albion would level the contest in the 39th minute when Darnell Furlong‘s header proved too much for Illan Meslier but if Swift had converted they could have secured a huge win.

Leeds point is a great result for West Brom

Leeds’ home record is brilliant as Daniel Farke’s side have only dropped points in three of their previous 17 league matches at Elland Road this season.

They are the standout team in the second tier, so a point away to the Whites is a very good result that could ultimately benefit the Baggies at the end of the campaign if they can hold their nerve in the final few weeks.

The Albion held onto their place in the playoffs with the draw and will take encouragement that they can end their season positively after a great performance against the champions-elect.

With 11 matches remaining, The Hawthorns outfit have a significant chance to secure a playoff berth and an attempt to return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

It remains to be seen whether they take that chance but the display against Farke’s side will be a major boost to Mowbray but a victory would have been an even bigger one had Swift been able to convert.
