Don Goodman wowed by West Brom moment v Leeds that reminded him of Corberan

Don Goodman sang the praises of Jayson Molumby after he brought back memories of Carlos Corberan as West Brom played out a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.

West Brom extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to three games as they returned from West Yorkshire with a point on 1 March.

Junior Firpo took just nine minutes to give Leeds the lead and it seemed the Baggies may have to be braced for a long afternoon at Elland Road.

However, Darnell Furlong nullified the early opener with six minutes left in the first half, allowing Tony Mowbray’s side to hold the hosts and claim a draw.

Goodman lauds ‘brilliant’ Molumby block v Ao Tanaka

Make no mistake, West Brom had to fight hard for the point as Daniel Farke’s side upped the ante in the second half, with Mateo Joseph hitting the woodwork late on.

In the 67th minute, the Baggies players, including Molumby, had to put their bodies on the line to prevent Leeds from going back in front.

Dan James, who provided the assist for Firpo’s opener, initially had a shot saved right in front of the goal and while the ball fell to Ao Tanaka, Molumby was quick to close him down and stop the effort.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football, Goodman said (1 March, 1:56 pm): “It really is a throwback to the Carlos Corberan days, isn’t it, of defending. Blocks, bodies on the line.

“Leeds are turning it up here, the heat. West Brom, it just feels like they are hanging on by the fingernails.

“Two brilliant blocks, one by Molumby there.”

West Brom in sixth place in Championship

Elland Road is not an easy place for any team to go to as Leeds have only lost once at home in the Championship this season.

It is also worth noting that West Brom lost three of their previous four visits there.

Therefore, Mowbray will be pleased to have returned from West Yorkshire with a point as he looks to lead the Baggies to promotion.

The result meant that Albion retained their place in the playoff spots, although Coventry City leapfrogged them after a 3-2 win against Oxford United.

Meanwhile, Blackburn are still on West Brom’s tails, sitting level with Mowbray’s side with 52 points after 1-1 draw with Norwich.
