Ally McCoist shares Tony Mowbray claim in middle of Newcastle v Brighton

West Brom supporters will have been surprised to hear Ally McCoist talking about Tony Mowbray during the Newcastle and Brighton FA Cup clash.

The Baggies secured a 1-1 draw with Championship leaders Leeds United (1 March) to strengthen their hopes of a playoff place.

Albion are currently sixth in the second tier in the final spot for a potential Wembley berth at the end of the campaign.

Mowbray has lost just three of his first nine matches since returning to the dugout at The Hawthorns and it seems observers are now starting to take notice.

McCoist makes Tony Mowbray claim

The Rangers legend was on commentary during the clash between the two Premier League clubs when a preview for the games to come on ITV was shown.

With Leeds hosting Portsmouth on the channel next week, McCoist was talking about the contest between the Whites and the Black Country outfit and specifically Tony Mowbray.

Speaking on ITV (2 March, 14:27 pm), he said: “West Brom, Tony is doing great there.”

West Brom need to maintain good form

Albion need to maintain the form that they have shown since Mowbray was reappointed if they are to have any chance of returning to the Premier League for the first time since the 2020/21 season.

With 11 matches left to play in the second tier, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, and Bristol City are right behind the Baggies and a run of poor results could see their playoff hopes dashed.

It is nice to see the 61-year-old being given credit on national television, in front of a huge audience but it will mean nothing if the West Midlands outfit does not secure their place in the promotion showdown at the end of the campaign.

A point at Leeds is a fantastic result, especially considering that Daniel Farke’s side had only dropped points in three matches at Elland Road beforehand and the confidence that the squad takes from that result could be vital.

However, the players need to be careful to not become overconfident after a positive outcome against the league leaders, if complacency sets in, it could curtail any momentum that has been gained and Mowbray will need to ensure that does happen.
