Tony Mowbray ‘absolutely fuming’ on touchline at West Brom ‘disaster’ v QPR

Tony Mowbray was left seething as West Brom beat QPR 1-0 in their Championship clash on Saturday.

Adam Armstrong’s first-half goal from the penalty spot was enough to seal all three points at The Hawthorns as Mowbray’s men up to 55 points, two points clear of seventh-placed Bristol City.

However, just before the half-time whistle was blown, there was a moment of “disaster” from the Baggies which threatened to turn the Championship clash on its head.

Darnell Furlong red card leaves Mowbray raging

Darnell Furlong was one of the Baggies’ best defenders before the red card he was handed after his supposed elbow to the head of Koki Saito.

QPR were setting themselves up to go on the attack from a Paul Nardi free-kick but just after the goalkeeper booted the ball up the pitch, Furlong started a foot race with Saito which ended up with the Japanese attacker on the floor.

While the R’s and their fans claimed the right-back had elbowed him, Mowbray certainly did not.

Speaking live on BBC Radio WM (8 March, 15:47pm), Steve Hermon and Tony Brown gave their thoughts on the challenge and also shared how Mowbray was reacting.

“That’s a disaster Steve for Albion, just seconds before half time really,” Brown said.

“The referee has seen something and it’s been bad enough for a red card.”

Hermon then said: “Tony Mowbray is just absolutely fuming at the fourth official and Saito, the man who’s gone down, is okay.”

West Brom got lucky against QPR

The Baggies should count their lucky stars that Marti Cifuentes’ men didn’t make the most of having an extra man in the second half.

QPR tried their luck many times throughout the second half but no matter what they did, West Brom put their bodies on the line to retain their lead.

Torbjorn Heggem was one of many West Brom players who turned their performance up a gear or two after the sending off and it was thanks to the effort from the squad that the Baggies further cemented their place in the top six.

There are still 10 league games left in the season for things to change of course but with the way things are headed, Mowbray’s men look well on their way to sealing a finish in the Championship playoff spots.

Which, with the number of injuries they’ve suffered already this season to players such as Daryl Dike is remarkable.
