Joe Wildsmith wows pundit in West Brom moment v Hull, ‘redeemed himself’

Joe Wildsmith was back to his best for West Brom in the draw against Hull City on Saturday.

The Baggies could only manage a point on 15 March as Ruben Selles’ side travelled to The Hawthorns for a Championship clash.

A first B71 goal for Isaac Price wasn’t enough for Tony Mowbray to secure all three points as Abu Kamara levelled the score just 12 minutes later.

The Tigers could have easily gone back to Yorkshire with all three points but Albion have Wildsmith to thank for stopping that from happening.

Wildsmith saves West Brom v Hull City

The 29-year-old keeper has come under fire since taking over as the Baggies’ number one after Alex Palmer departed for Ipswich Town.

It is fair to say that the former Derby County shot stopper has had some shaky moments in the Black Country which have been a cause for concern.

Arguably his biggest error came last time against Burnley as he dropped a clanger which allowed Zian Flemming to tap into an empty net.

Given that John Swift had just opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, this was extremely disappointing.

As a result, against Hull, the Englishman had some making up to do and after multiple top saves, Andy Johnson believes he did exactly that.

Speaking live on WBATV (15 March, 04:42pm), he said: “The first save is good, the second save is excellent as well. He’s more than redeemed himself.

“I wanted to know how he would react [after the Burnley error] and he’s reacted brilliantly today.”

Wildsmith repays Mowbray faith v Hull City

Almost no Baggies fan would have chosen Wildsmith in their starting 11 if given the choice.

Josh Griffiths has felt like the obvious choice in recent weeks after his loan at Bristol Rovers was cut short when Palmer left.

With that being said, the Albion head coach has stood firm and has backed the 29-year-old to perform and be his number one choice.

This certainly paid off against Hull as the keeper made multiple saves, his best coming off the back of a Mason Holgate header.

When Kamara went one on one, many fans thought they were going to see Albion fall behind but the English keeper made sure that didn’t happen.

This certainly made up for his error in the Burnley draw and secured a point at The Hawthorns which may have been missed out on otherwise.
