Dan Ashworth returns to The Hawthorns as he speaks out on West Brom

Dan Ashworth has always remained a loved figure at West Brom despite his departure from The Hawthorns back in 2013.

Since leaving West Brom, Ashworth has had a decorated CV to his name, carrying out various director roles at England, Brighton and Newcastle United.

In his last role, the 54-year-old was the Sporting Director of Manchester United, joining the Red Devils in July 2024 but leaving the club after just six months.

Even though Ashworth is well known for his gigs at Brighton and Newcastle, it was West Brom where he began his journey in any directorial capacity.

Ashworth has now returned to The Hawthorns for a noble and charitable cause.

Ashworth’s time with West Brom

The Englishman started as the West Brom academy manager in 2004 and stayed in the same post till 2007, before being promoted to Technical Director, which he carried out meticulously for six years.

While he was not directly involved in transfers, he oversaw scouting and player development. Although Ashworth didn’t sign Romelu Lukaku personally, he played an important role in scouting the striker.

The former Brighton director is currently without a job in football, but that has not stopped him from doing noble work.

The Albion Foundation shared on X that they had welcomed the former Technical Director for the Football Memories event at The Hawthorns, which helps local people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

They wrote: “We welcomed former West Brom Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth back to The Hawthorns this morning.

“Dan joined our Football Memories session, which helps those in the local region with Alzheimer’s and dementia and told participants all about his time at the club.”

The former Newcastle United Sporting Director was pictured talking to the patients and uplifting their moods as he spoke about his time at The Hawthorns.

West Brom Sporting Director Andrew Nestor to have a busy summer

There was a swirl of ins and outs last summer at The Hawthorns, with as many as 11 arrivals and 18 departures.

Sporting Director Andrew Nestor is expected to have another busy summer as Tony Mowbray tweaks the squad to his liking since arriving in January.

Mowbray has tried to create a side that plays free-flowing football but has a solid midfield and defensive line.

While the 61-year-old has managed to implement some of his ideas in the squad, which has yielded positive results, he will have to do more if the Baggies are to secure Premier League promotion.

In the event of a promotion, Nestor will be working closely with Mowbray to improve the quality of the squad and create a team that is fit to fight in the English top flight.

If only Ashworth was still in position at The Hawthorns.
