West Brom predicted XI v Sunderland: Tony Mowbray set to make two changes
Tony Mowbray will want West Brom to return to winning ways when they take on Sunderland at the Hawthorns on 5 April.
After losing 1-0 to Norwich City at Carrow Road, spirits will be low inside the Baggies dressing room and they’ll want the three points to stay in the play-off places.
Currently, they occupy sixth place, but Middlesbrough and Bristol City, who are seventh and eighth, also have the same number of points (57).
Michael Johnston to return to the playing eleven against Sunderland
West Brom dominated possession and had the better chances but failed to capitalise on them against Norwich.
Mowbray would want to change that and he could look to bring in Michael Johnston to play on the left wing.
It could come down to him having to make a decision between Adam Armstrong and Karlan Grant and he’s likely to go with the latter.
Predicted Championship table | Expected points | Title | Automatic promotion | Playoffs |
6. West Brom | 68.46 | 0% | 0% | 55.18% |
Jayson Molumby, who played as a striker against Norwich, is expected to continue to do so.
The other change will see Darnell Furlong returning to right-back as he’s served out his suspension and replace Mason Holgate who struggled recently.
Having him back will certainly boost the Baggies’ chances of picking up the three points.

West Brom will back themselves to beat Sunderland
Sitting sixth with 13 wins and 18 draws from 39 games, the Baggies are desperate for three points to maintain their edge over teams like Middlesbrough and Bristol City, who are level on points.
Under Mowbray, who returned for his second spell in January, West Brom will back themselves to win, given their strong home record, losing just once at the Hawthorns in 2025, a 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
With Tom Fellows’ league-leading 11 assists, they possess the attacking firepower to exploit Sunderland’s inconsistent form.
Additionally, Mowbray’s experience and familiarity with Sunderland, having managed them to a play-off finish, will give the hosts confidence in securing a crucial victory.
It’s important that they start the game strongly and grab a goal as early as they possibly can.
