Joe Wildsmith outrage: West Brom fans slaughter ’embarrassment’ v Sunderland
West Brom supporters are left reeling once again after their side dropped points against Tony Mowbray’s former club Sunderland at The Hawthorns.
Albion went down 1-0 to the Black Cats in one of the Championship’s lunchtime kick-offs on Saturday (5 April), courtesy for the visitors of Trai Hume’s free-kick.
Baggies fans fumed from the strike from Hume, however, as goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith was slammed for his part in the decider.

Wildsmith ‘costing’ West Brom say fans as Mowbray hammered
West Brom supporters have lamented some of Mowbray’s decisions, including to persist with Wildsmith between the sticks, the previous second-choice having taken the jersey since Alex Palmer’s departure for Ipswich Town in the winter transfer window.
Wildsmith arguably could have done much better with Hume’s incoming free-kick, flapping in the vague direction of the ball as it flew past him into the far corner.
While some blamed Wildsmith himself, others laid the accountability at former Sunderland head coach Mowbray‘s door for continuing to select the 29-year-old.
Fans in their hundreds took to X to air their views, as their side suffer a massive blow in their push to join the Black Cats inside the top six come the conclusion of the season.

Albion without a win in four as promotion push punctured
West Brom are in trouble now as they push for the Championship play-offs.
Away from the mistake from Wildsmith, the Baggies struggled to break down the Sunderland defence when the clear January aim was to attract enough firepower to the squad to turn draws into wins.
While that initially happened to an extent, they have now lost each of their last two, and are without a win in four – their last triumph coming at The Hawthorns against QPR on 8 March.
As of the conclusion of the lunchtime games, West Brom sat seventh but anxiously await results of 3pm games involving Bristol City, Watford, Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday.
West Brom – last four results | Reuslt |
Sunderland (H) | L 0-1 |
Norwich (A) | L 0-1 |
Hull (H) | D 1-1 |
Burnley (A) | D 1-1 |
The former two of that quartet, who face each other in another Saturday clash, make up the next opponents for Mowbray’s side, before another potential six-pointer against Coventry City.
The trio of games could undoubtedly make or break the season at The Hawthorns, and how the fans receive Mowbray come the end of it.
