West Brom suffer crushing new injury blow – ‘Not good news, I’m afraid’

West Brom’s Premier League promotion hopes have been handed several crushing blows this weekend.

The Baggies were defeated 1-0 by fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland on Saturday (5 April) at The Hawthorns.

Tony Mowbray’s men struggled in an attacking sense, managing just three shots on target throughout the 90 minutes, despite making 21 attempted shots in total.

Sunderland’s Trai Hume scored the only goal of the game, which strengthened their position in the playoffs while having a negative impact on West Brom’s.

Mowbray’s men are now outside of the playoff positions as they sit eighth in the table, and while they are only three points away from that, time is running out to secure a position.

Tony Mowbray confirms injury blow

Losing the game wasn’t the only negative to come from the defeat against Sunderland though, as the Baggies are now also set for a period without Isaac Price.

The Northern Ireland midfielder has been a regular in the first team since joining the Baggies in January, with Mowbray instantly making him part of his midfield.

He had missed out on Albion’s recent defeat against Norwich as he was an unused substitute, but that was due to a calf issue that Mowbray didn’t want to risk.

Price then suffered another injury when he rolled his ankle on Friday during training, which ruled him out of the game against Sunderland – one he had been set to start.

Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox revealed a blow in regards to Price’s injury, and how long he could now miss.

“Not good news on Isaac Price, I’m afraid,” said Cox.

“Ankle ligament damage in training [on Friday] for the West Brom man.”

The 21-year-old has since undergone a scan which has confirmed grade two ankle ligament damage, and it’s unclear if he will be able to have any part to play in the rest of the season.

West Brom will need to focus for the final push

Losing Price is going to be a serious blow to Mowbray’s options, while the Baggies also have concerns about the fitness of Torbjorn Heggem.

However, West Brom will have to focus on the task at hand if they want to be involved in the conversation for promotion by the time the season ends.

The Baggies still have a strong chance of getting into the playoffs at the end of the season, but they will need some consistency and an improvement in their performances to make that happen.
