Jayson Molumby sent off: Keith Hackett reacts to West Brom incident v Bristol City

Jayson Molumby faces a three-match ban after being sent off in West Brom’s defeat at Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Albion were looking good for a point at Ashton Gate before Molumby, 25, saw red and made a rash challenge on Bristol’s Joe Williams.

The Republic of Ireland international seemed annoyed by Bristol’s failure to stop play with Ousmane Diakite was down with an injury, leading to him taking matters into his own hands by making a needless challenge on the Robins’ number eight.

Referee Mathew Donohue was right in front of the challenge when it happened and didn’t hesitate to dish out a straight red card to the West Brom midfielder.

Donohue hailed after Molumby sending-off in West Brom loss

Keith Hackett agrees with Donohue’s decision that Molumby committed an act of serious foul play on Tuesday night.

While the contact was rather minimal, there was no doubt that the Irish midfielder needlessly raised his foot before moving it down in a stamping motion.

Hackett, a former Premier League and FIFA-listed referee, thinks it was the correct call.

Molumby will be banned for these three Championship fixtures.

“The referee was in a very good position to see the serious foul play offence and correctly issued a red card to Jayson Molumby,” Hackett told West Brom News.

“Serious foul play is a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality.

“Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.”

Molumby to blame for West Brom’s Ashton Gate defeat

It’s not the first time this season that Molumby’s got himself into a spot of bother with officials.

The West Brom midfielder’s disciplinary record has been rather shocking and he’s definitely been lucky to wait until April to have been shown his first red card.

He’s now banned for the next three games.

Unfortunately, he won’t be in Albion’s opponents’ head. He’ll be sitting in the stands, instead.
