West Brom fans go berserk at what Mason Holgate did v Bristol City – ‘Pathetic’

West Brom fans showed Mason Holgate no mercy after the Baggies lost 2-1 against Bristol City on Tuesday.

Albion slipped further away from the playoff spots after a defeat at Bristol on 8 April extended their winless run in the Championship to five games.

Tony Mowbray must have breathed a sigh of relief after Alex Mowatt pulled level for West Brom just six minutes after Nahki Wells put the Robins in front.

However, more disappointment followed as Jayson Molumby was sent off just before the 90-minute mark, allowing Haydon Roberts to grab a late winner.

West Brom in Championship trouble

West Brom have now lost each of their last three Championship games and find themselves sitting eighth in the table, three points behind sixth-placed Middlesbrough.

Mowbray’s side were in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs, having occupied a top-six spot since February, only to fumble it towards the end.

The Baggies now risk the prospect of missing out on a playoff spot, and subsequently a chance for promotion.

Albion cannot overturn their form unless the likes of Mason Holgate step up for the team.

The Everton loanee was guilty of producing a poor piece of defending in the build-up to Wells’ opener in the 56th minute.

Holgate, whose defending has often left much to be desired this season, committed to intercepting a pass to Wells without much thought and quickly paid the price for his poor decision-making.

The Bristol attacker only had to perform a quick turn to leave the centre-back on the floor and set himself for a shot that found its way past Josh Griffiths and into the back of the net.

Albion fans react to what Holgate did

It took little time for West Brom fans to pick up on the incident, as they took to social media to hit out at Holgate for making things easy for Wells.

One fan described the Everton ace as the “worst defender” they have ever seen at West Brom before labelling him “pathetic”, while another dubbed him “awful”.

Many supporters also questioned Mowbray’s decision to start the 28-year-old in the first place.

Holgate has made 24 Championship appearances for West Brom this season, contributing towards two goals in the process.

Albion have conceded 18 goals when he has been on the pitch, while keeping seven clean sheets.

It is evident that the defender does not have a future at The Hawthorns beyond this season.
