West Brom’s ‘actual Championship position’ shared by supercomputer

West Brom still have hopes of a top six finish, though their chances have plummeted in recent weeks.

West Brom are winless in their last five, having won just one of their last seven, showcasing exactly why they have fallen out of the playoff places with five games to go.

The Baggies have struggled to pose any real attacking threat in those encounters, scoring just five times and failing to score more than two since the 5-1 victory over Portsmouth back in January.

With five games to go, Albion sit in eighth place and will need a big swing in results for them to re-enter the playoff race.

Tony Mowbray hasn’t had the desired effect at West Brom

After the last 12 months Tony Mowbray endured on a personal level, everyone associated with football was hoping he could hit the ground running at The Hawthorns.

However, things haven’t panned out that way, and West Brom fans have already started to call for him to be sacked with playoff chances dwindling away.

Albion are five points outside of the top six, and according to the Opta supercomputer, are three points behind where they should be based on the data from the season.

8. West Brom41+1157
West Brom are looking increasingly unlikely to finish in the top six this season under Mowbray.

Using xG for and against throughout the course of the campaign, West Brom are expected to have picked up 60 points, though eighth place is exactly where they should be.

If anything, it showcases that Albion just haven’t been anywhere near as good as they need to be to get promoted from the Championship.

West Brom may need change this summer

Mowbray just hasn’t been able to get his West Brom side firing since he took over in January, and a failure to reach the playoffs would showcase that.

If that scenario plays out, it may be in the best interest of both parties to part ways in the summer in a bid to get West Brom headed back in the right direction, while Mowbray will be afforded the time he deserves to relax from the unforgiving world of football.
