Mowbray fuming after what he saw in West Brom loss v Coventry City

Tony Mowbray was left raging in West Brom’s 2-0 loss to Coventry on Saturday.

The 61-year-old has won just five of his 17 matches since he returned to the Baggies dugout and their playoff chances are now hanging by a thread.

Albion are six points behind the Sky Blues, who occupy the final spot in the top six, and it looks increasingly unlikely that they will make the end-of-season showdown.

It was a must-win contest and the gap might prove to be too much with time running out on the Championship season.

Mowbray furious with West Brom defending

The visitors were already a goal down after Jack Rudoni put the ball past Josh Griffiths in the sixth minute of the contest.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was called into action again as the half-time break approached, making a good save to deny Liam Kitching.

Speaking on talkSPORT (18 April, 15:37 pm), Matt Murray said: “It’s a really good save. Tony Mowbray, though, will be fuming.

“His side invited the free-kick, then not only got the first contact from it but also the second as well. Griffiths has made a really good save.”

West Brom need huge turnaround under Mowbray

The Baggies have faced a brutal set of circumstances in recent months, with the departure of Carlos Corberan, Profit and Sustainability issues and Alex Palmer leaving on deadline day.

However, their form under Mowbray is still unacceptable, as they have squandered a great chance to seal a potential Premier League promotion berth after an inconsistent spell.

The race for the Championship playoffs

Albion’s last three matches are favourable, as they are all against relegation-threatened teams, but they may still miss out on the playoffs due to their torrid recent run.

The Baggies had failed to win in their last five before the 2-1 win over Watford on 12 April and the defeat to Frank Lampard’s side could be fatal when it comes to their top-six chances.

Lee Hendrie was called out on Sky Sports when he overlooked the Black Country club’s chances, but he may be proved right after the latest result.

The matches against Derby (21 April), Cardiff (26 April) and Luton (3 May) may not even matter – it might be too late to turn it around depending on results elsewhere and Mowbray may pay for the failure with his job.
