Damia Abella sends Tony Mowbray message as West Brom sack confirmed

Damia Abella has seen another manager come and go after Tony Mowbray was sacked by West Brom on Easter Monday.

West Brom’s surprise 3-1 defeat against Derby proved to be too much for Mowbray, who watched any promotion hopes become near-impossible.

Mowbray left West Brom 10th in the Championship, and with six points between them and the playoffs, his time ended in disappointment.

The Baggies were aiming for promotion back to the Premier League this season, with Shilen Patel now looking for his second manager already.

Abella worked under Mowbray during his tenure at The Hawthorns as the first team statistical analyst, which is a role he’s had since 2023.

The former Barcelona star has previously worked for Watford in a similar role and has been helping to push the Baggies forward during his time at the club.

West Brom are still within touching distance of a playoff spot.

He was able to work closely with Mowbray throughout this season, with Abella now part of the interim management team alongside James Morrison and Boaz Myhill.

Reacting following the sad news, Abella sent Mowbray a message to wish him all the best for the future.

Writing on X, he said, “Wishing you all the best for the future, Tony. It’s been a pleasure working with you.”

West Brom are looking to the future

Even though Mowbray did bring little success to The Hawthorns, it ultimately hasn’t worked out due to his failure to get the Baggies back to the Premier League.

While they still technically can finish in the playoffs, it would take a near miracle for that to happen with two games left.

Instead, the Baggies are obviously looking toward the future, and that’s one that didn’t include Mowbray being at the helm, with a new manager now set to be given the full summer window.

Mark Venus, the assistant coach, has also followed Mowbray out of the door, and it remains to be seen if any other members of the coaching staff will depart before the season’s end.

Big change is coming, Patel has to make sure of that.
