Tony Mowbray sacking deflects blame from real problem at West Brom

West Brom opted to sack Tony Mowbray after their defeat to Derby County, though it has done little to solve the bigger problem at The Hawthorns.

While still mathematically possible, West Brom’s hopes of finishing inside the top six have diminished, and after the recent form, that won’t come as a surprise to anyone.

Throughout that period, much of the blame was placed on the shoulders of Mowbray, who faced criticism for every little thing he did in the three months he was in charge.

Much of that was warranted, but if West Brom think a new manager will solve their deep-rooted issues, they have another thing coming.

West Brom’s recruitment has been shambolic

First and foremost, Shilen Patel isn’t void of criticism. After all, it was his decision to appoint Mowbray at a time when everyone knew it wasn’t the right appointment.

That is the first concern that needs addressing, but the other concern, and perhaps the biggest, comes in regard to the recruitment under Andrew Nestor.

West Brom have gone from being in the top six, to being tenth in a few weeks.

West Brom have signed some dreadful players over the years, and very rarely invested in signing players capable of taking them to the next level.

A new manager then comes in and is tasked with getting them promoted, when in reality, the majority of the current playing squad are levels below where West Brom need them to be.

That needs to change this summer, and if not, the Baggies have no chance of returning to the Premier League anytime soon.

Albion supporters deserve more in the next two games

West Brom have nothing to play for now in reality, though that has been the feeling for months now, based on the direction of the club as it stands.

Albion fans have backed their side through thick and thin, and if that support is to be there again next season, the players need to give something back to the fanbase who have been starved of quality and optimism all campaign.

With their final two games against sides scrapping against relegation, West Brom have no excuse not to pick up six points.

After that, Patel needs to get the next appointment right.
