West Brom announce second exit after Tony Mowbray sack

West Brom’s campaign has all gone wrong at the worst time of the season.

A 3-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Derby County on Monday (21 April) proved to be the tipping point at The Hawthorns, as Tony Mowbray was sacked from his job hours after.

The Baggies have slipped to 10th in the Championship table, six points away from the play-offs, having failed to capitalise on some of the results around them.

With just two games left to play, it would take a near miracle to secure a top-six finish now.

West Brom announce further departure

Losing Carlos Corberan midway through the season was never going to make life easy for West Brom as they looked to achieve their aims.

However, having sat in the top six for the majority of the campaign, to fall out at the end of the season is incredibly disappointing for the Baggies.

West Brom have dropped out of the play-offs.

The signs were there too, as Mowbray seemingly struggled to identify his strongest starting line-up while results started to dip at The Hawthorns.

It’s not just the boss who has lost his job, with West Brom having also announced the departure of Mark Venus.

The assistant coach is also leaving the Black Country immediately, following the boss out the door.

Shilen Patel to feel the pressure at West Brom

It was a ruthless decision to get rid of Mowbray so quickly, but he has not achieved what he was brought into the club to do and, instead, has looked out of his depth.

The Baggies are not looking ahead to a play-off campaign this term, but making sure the right person is appointed now will no doubt be a massive boost for next season instead.

Shilen Patel clearly accepts he made the wrong decision in his appointment of Corberan’s successor and it is better to rectify the issue now, in preparation for the transfer window, rather than letting the former boss handle the business, only to then have the reins taken by someone else.

Venus clearly had to leave Albion too, following the manager out of the door to ensure the end of this short era is definitively marked.

The pressure is on Patel to make the right appointment now, as whoever does take over the Baggies will have a big job on their hands with preparation needed almost immediately.

The summer is now a crucial one for West Brom and after struggles with PSR of late, the owners will be keen to show the supporters they do know how to take further steps in the right drecition.
