West Brom new manager: Liam Rosenior and Steve Cooper updates as decision made

Tony Mowbray was sacked by West Brom after a 3-1 defeat against Derby County on Easter Monday.

Mowbray had only been back at The Hawthorns for three months before Shilen Patel decided to part ways with him.

However, in that time, the Baggies have fallen out of the play-offs, and a loss to the relegation-threatened Rams has effectively ended their season.

West Brom already have new targets

Mathematically, West Brom can still make the play-offs but it is highly unlikely to happen at this point with two consecutive losses serving as a sucker punch.

This means that there will be plenty of work to be done at The Hawthorns over the summer transfer window, both on and off the pitch.

With that in mind, Patel will be keen to get a new manager in place in time for the start of the season, in the hope that a full summer for a new boss will reap rewards.

A play-off finish has to be the minimum expectation again next term and it seems the hierarchy at Albion already have ideas of who could help them get there.

According to Baggies insider DOOD via X (22 April), Steve Cooper and Liam Rosenior are both names that are being considered for the vacancy at West Brom.

However, the Black Country outfit are in no rush to make an appointment, knowing how important it is to get this decision completely right.

West Brom appointment is crucial

Carlos Corberan’s mid-season departure from The Hawthorns was always going to rock the boat.

Patel took his time in a new appointment, although going back to Mowbray has not paid off in the way he would have hoped.

Mowbray’s tenure with West Brom.

Although he is an experienced Championship manager, the 61-year-old seemed unclear about what his strongest side was, and while it was clear that results were suffering, not enough was done to change that pattern.

With the Baggies’ season now over, the chief does have more time to take over this decision and it has to be one that he gets right as it will shape the entirety of the summer transfer window and the new season.

Rosenior has come close to the play-offs before with a Hull City side he transformed and is now at Strasbourg, sitting seventh in Ligue 1, meaning he may be reluctant to leave.

Meanwhile, Cooper has shown his talent at the helm before, yet his most recent role at Leicester City went terribly and turned out very sour.

It’s a big decision to be made and one that will shape the future of West Brom, meaning the owners will have to choose exactly what direction they want to go in.
