BBC employee says something he never thought he’d say about West Brom

West Brom are on the hunt for a new permanent manager for the second time this season after Tony Mowbray was sacked on Monday.

The Baggies appeared set to clinch a play-off spot for the second consecutive season before former boss Carlos Corberan left in favour of Valencia in December.

Mowbray, who previously guided the Albion to the Championship title in 2007/08, came in to replace the Spaniard and hoped to guide the Black Country side to the top six.

However, the Baggies have slipped to 10th in the second-tier table, and Monday’s 3-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Derby prompted owner Shilen Patel to sack Mowbray.

Steve Hermon left stunned by West Brom developments

Including interim bosses, West Brom have now had four head coaches this term amid their turbulent campaign.

BBC Radio WM’s Steve Hermon posted on X: “The 4th head coach I’ve interviewed at Albion this season. I never thought I’d say that at the start of the campaign!”

West Brom need more stability next season

The Baggies were relegated from the Premier League back in 2021, but the Black Country club did not manage to finish in the playoffs until last season, when they landed fifth spot thanks to Corberan’s stewardship.

The Hawthorns faithful had hoped that their side could emulate that success this time around, but it wasn’t to be as they no longer boast a realistic chance of finishing in the top six.

West Brom have now witnessed two permanent bosses depart the West Midlands this term, which has prompted their playoff credentials to slip away.

Finishing in the top six will be the Baggies’ primary objective once again next season, but Patel must get his next managerial appointment spot on to make that happen.

Another season of instability could see Albion finish mid-table once again next term, which would not be a satisfactory outcome for one of the Championship’s most renowned sides.
