Grady Diangana transfer call ‘unsurprising’ after West Brom disappointment

Grady Diangana could potentially end his stint at West Brom soon, as a transfer away from The Hawthorns is expected.

The 27-year-old, whose contract expires soon, has been a key player for the Baggies in the current campaign, but hasn’t been able to deliver in what has been an underwhelming campaign in the West Midlands.

Diangana was left on the bench as the Albion drew 0-0 at Cardiff City Stadium in the Championship on Saturday (26 April).

With hopes of making the play-offs extinguished at the Black Country outfit, Shilen Patel sacked Tony Mowbray, and significant squad changes may be on the cards in the coming months.

West Brom to let Diangana leave next summer

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Diangana leave the Baggies at the end of the season, Don Goodman says.

The former English striker has been disappointed with the DR Congo international’s lack of impact at the Albion over the years.

Goodman feels the 27-year-old right-winger has underachieved like most of his teammates at The Hawthorns.

Speaking to Football League World (26 April), the Englishman said: “Diangana, like most of the West Brom squad, with the exception of two or three players, has massively underachieved.

“Not just this season, but the last couple of seasons really. He is a player of such ability that just hasn’t impacted games in a way that his ability should allow him to. Ultimately, it’s disappointing that he was unable to do that.

“I’m a little bit surprised that they relieved Mowbray with two games to go, but I’m not particularly surprised that Diangana won’t be at the football club next season.”

Patel must appoint right manager at The Hawthorns

Patel didn’t waste time deciding on Mowbray’s future after the Baggies lost to Derby County at home on 21 April.

The Americans must now decide on the next manager for the Albion, which will be one of the most critical things needed before the start of next season.

Carlos Corberan’s work at The Hawthorns has washed away, and it feels like the West Midlands outfit now have to start from scratch.

West Brom need someone with the right attitude and style of play, capable of helping them return to the Premier League.

While fans had started to believe that the Baggies could return to the top flight after what Corberan achieved, it will be interesting to see whether they’ll have patience with the next manager to rebuild the team.

Diangana’s contribution this season have been negligent, and the Black Country club should add more quality to their squad to help the next head coach to at least compete for the play-offs.

The Albion should look towards their academy and find hidden gems, like they did with Tom Fellows.

A significant amount of work needs to be done in B71 to build a squad that can achieve success.
