Cifuentes in talks over QPR escape amid West Brom next manager update

Marti Cifuentes has achieved relative successive at West Brom’s Championship rivals QPR and is seemingly looking for a route out.

The Spaniard has punched above his weight across his year-and-a-half at Loftus Road, with QPR sitting mid-table despite a lack of backing.

Cifuentes was previously linked with the West Brom job around the time Carlos Corberan – a man he shares many similarities with – departed The Hawthorns.

And The Mirror reported on Wednesday (23 April) that QPR are growing concerned Cifuentes could leave amid interest from West Brom and Norwich City.

Those fears could come true if a fresh update provided by Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth is anything to go by.

Cifuentes representatives open talks with Championship rival

Cifuentes only signed a new long-term deal with QPR last year and is therefore under contract at Loftus Road for the foreseeable future.

However, Sheth reported via X (27 April) that Cifuentes’ representatives have held talks with an unnamed Championship club over becoming their manager next season.

Sheth added that talks are not yet at a stage where permission has been granted for formal talks to take place.

While West Brom were not named by Sheth, Albion are one of only a few managerless Championship clubs.

Cifuentes a good option for West Brom

Cifuentes made a name for himself in his homeland before succeeding at Swedish side Hammarby and then taking on the QPR job in 2023.

There are similarities with Corberan, in that both men didn’t enjoy particularly notable playing careers but have punched above their weight in the world of coaching.

Cifuentes’ name may not get Albion fans all that excited, but he has proved himself on a shoestring budget at QPR and that can only be a positive if he does arrive at The Hawthorns.

Bigger names will no doubt be linked with the West Brom job, but this is a link that makes perfect sense on the front of it.
