West Brom were held to a 0-0 draw by Cardiff City in the Championship on Saturday and can no longer land a playoff spot.
Interim boss James Morrison was unable to achieve a victory in his first game in charge of the Baggies, but did manage to bring the Albion’s losing run to an end.
West Brom were defeated in both of their last two games under Tony Mowbray, while Easter Monday’s loss to Derby prompted the 61-year-old to face the sack.
The Baggies’ stalemate in South Wales confirmed Cardiff’s relegation to League One, while the Black Country side will compete in the second tier once again.

The Baggies’ draw in South Wales marked their last away game of the season, as the West Midlands side host Luton at The Hawthorns in their final fixture.
West Brom delivered a message to supporters via Instagram on Saturday: “You’ve cheered us on up and down the country this season. Thanks so much for your support in Cardiff, and for your brilliant backing on our travels throughout the 2024/25 campaign, Baggies.”
Former Baggies midfielder Yokuslu liked the post.

Shilen Patel faces the biggest decision of his West Brom reign so far
After purchasing the Black Country club in 2024, owner Shilen Patel oversaw the Albion’s run to the playoffs last season under former boss Carlos Corberan.
Opponent | Result |
Watford (H) | 2-1 W |
Coventry (A) | 2-0 L |
Derby (H) | 1-3 L |
Cardiff (A) | 0-0 D |
But Patel’s first full season as West Brom owner has been a turbulent one after Corberan opted to trade the West Midlands side for Valencia back in December.
Since joining the La Liga club, the Spaniard has steered Valencia away from their previous relegation worries and into a relatively comfortable 14th spot.
Patel opted to replace Corberan with Mowbray, whose return to The Hawthorns was anything but a success as West Brom failed to finish in the top six.
Including interim managers, the Baggies have been overseen by four different bosses this season, which is not a situation Patel will want to emulate next term.
It is therefore vital that the West Brom owner makes the correct managerial call this summer ahead of next campaign.
